TEHRAN (IQNA) – The winners of Algeria’s 18th international competition on memorization of the Holy Quran were honored in a ceremony on Saturday.

A total of 51 Quran memorizers from different countries took part in this edition, which was organized virtually from February 6 to 17.

Shima Anfal Tabani from the host country won the top prize in this edition, according to Algeria Radio.

The runner-up was Hassan Shuaib Shafei from Sweden while Abdul Aziz Makhlouf Salem Malouqa from Libya came third.

Memorizer of the entire Quran Abolfazl Aqdasi represented the Islamic Republic in the international Quranic contest.

A number of government officials and diplomats from Muslim countries attended the closing ceremony held in the capital Algiers.

In an address, Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments Youssef Belmahdi said that holding the international Holy Quran award signifies the commitment of Algerian and other Muslim nations to the Holy Book and to Islam.

He also appreciated the support from Algeria’s president and scholars for the competition.

The official further highlighted the Arab country’s support for justice in the world, especially for the cause of Palestine.

Launched in 2004, Algeria’s international Quran contest is held annually on memorization of the Holy Quran with the participation of young people under the age of 25.
